"It was imprudent of us, in the first place, to become authors. We could have become something regular, but we managed not to.
We were lucky, but we were also determined." Roy Blount Jr

"I don’t change the facts to enhance the drama. I think of it the other way round, the drama has got to fit the facts,
and it’s your job as a writer to find the shape in real life."

Birthday Weekend

On Friday morning, Ruth barked, for only the second time ever. Apparently she only barks at monsters. There happened to be giant monster deer in the front yard. It didn't move until Lola, a professional barker and watchdog, started up.

I've finished my website update...finally. I was sort of distracted these past few days. But now my sidebar has a nifty link to my Prague travelogue.

We got the birthday festivities rolling Friday afternoon and evening up at the cottage, with assorted family members visiting from out of state, and chicken breasts on the grill.

Yesterday, Birthday Man had to carry out an official town duty in the morning, and by the time he returned I'd arranged his birthday bouquet.

After he opened the many gifts and cards from around the country and overseas, we headed off on a Seacoast excursion to a famous garden with lots of roses.

The weather was divine. Everyone in the world was on the beach, so we had the place to ourselves!

In addition to all these hybrid tea roses, there is a conservatory with tropical plants, succulents, and cacti. Plus a shady Japanese garden (including a koi pond). And another lovely large rose garden enclosed by perennial borders. Check out the size of these blue delphiniums--

The roses were at their peak, and there were lots of interesting modern hybrids. Some of the blossoms were enormous, and the range of colours was amazing.

We drove along the edge of the ocean--the tide was in, and there were so many sailboats on the water. Birthday Man picked out a favourite seafood restaurant for the official feast. Here's the view from our table.

Last stop on the way home was the supermarket, where we picked up fresh raspberries, an angel food bar cake, and some Redi-Whip topping. After watching one of the awesome DVD's Birthday Man received from yours truly, we had a delicious dessert. Lola and Ruth had some of the Redi-Whip, but we didn't share the cake or raspberries!

Tonight the fun continues: we're grilling steaks, and I'm harvesting fresh snow peas from my garden.

With so many rose pics already, no need for a Rose of the Day....
