"It was imprudent of us, in the first place, to become authors. We could have become something regular, but we managed not to.
We were lucky, but we were also determined." Roy Blount Jr

"I don’t change the facts to enhance the drama. I think of it the other way round, the drama has got to fit the facts,
and it’s your job as a writer to find the shape in real life."
Hilary Mantel

The Big Swim

I read about the Lake Winnipesaukee endurance swimmer this morning. I had no idea how long it would take him to swim the 21 miles from Centre Harbor to the tip of our Bay, but I was watching all afternoon. I took my laptop out to the porch so I could keep an eye on the lake.

Somehow he got past our dock without my noticing! Perhaps while I was having supper, or more likely when I walked the dogs.

A little while ago I noticed that the sunset was turning the sky fiery and went outside to take pictures.

And there he was, swimming up the Bay!

I watched for a long time. It was easy to follow his progress, because there are a couple of motor boats and two kayaks travelling with him, with running lights.

He's had a long day of swimming but he was fortunate in the glorious weather. It's a very pleasant, evening but he's got many hours of nighttime swimming ahead of him. Go, Maury!
