"It was imprudent of us, in the first place, to become authors. We could have become something regular, but we managed not to.
We were lucky, but we were also determined." Roy Blount Jr

"I don’t change the facts to enhance the drama. I think of it the other way round, the drama has got to fit the facts,
and it’s your job as a writer to find the shape in real life."
Hilary Mantel

Horsing Around

I was sorting through a box of family photos and found some old faves. On Monday I was telling one of the visiting relatives about my years as a little equestrienne. His kids attend horse camp in the summer and I was teasing him that he ought to buy them a horse of their own--as I had! (I don't think my lobbying effort was at all successful.)

Wearing my tiny helmet, seated on my tiny saddle, at a horse show or a hunt.

Legs not yet long enough for my dad's saddle. (Evidently I wasn't planning to ride that day--check out those spiffy red Keds!)

My mother.

Our property is plenty big enough for a horse...but who would look after it for me when I'm up at the lake?
